The year is 2022. The place is Walla Walla. And the streets are filled with electric-powered scooters, bicycles, motorcycles, trucks, cars and even tractors in what could become the world’s premiere electric vehicle festival: the Electric Revolution.

That’s the vision of Paul d’Orleans, who came before the Walla Walla City Council on Monday, Aug. 23, to pitch the Electric Revolution, a three-day festival and showcase that would take place Memorial Day weekend in 2022. The council agreed to sign a non-binding letter of intent to host the festival, which, if successful, could become an annual feature of Walla Walla.

A historian specializing in motorist culture, motorcycle history and electric vehicles, d’Orleans has worked as a curator for the last four years at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, one of the world’s largest automotive museums. He is also the founder of The Vintagent, a digital magazine exploring the imagery and stories of the world of motorcycles.

He has also put on festivals before, mainly smaller multi-day events in California. But with the Electric Revolution, d’Orleans said Monday that he’s dreaming big. The proposed three-day event would feature racing, art displays, live music at the Range Amphitheatre, and a world-class concentration of electric vehicle technology.

“I’m interested in how stories move culture, and I’m interested in creating a big story about electric technology and vehicles that isn’t being told,” d’Orleans told council members Monday. “Electric vehicles are actually really fun, they’re really powerful, and they have the potential of being incredibly green.”

That’s the story d’Orleans wants to share with a wider public, by bringing together the bleeding edge in EVs from around the world to one area to showcase not only technology, but the enjoyment the future of transportation could bring. The Electric Revolution wouldn’t just be about comparing charging speeds and battery life, d’Orleans said.

“No one has ever done, let’s say electric drift racing, or electric motorcycle racing, and there is no electric bicycle racing,” d’Orleans said. “Looking at all of these different areas where competitions exist, almost none of them have an electric component yet.”

“And they will, but wouldn’t it be cool to be the first in the world?”

The festival’s entertainment and competition could also extend to the community’s youth, d’Orleans suggested. Instead of a soap box derby, local schools could be given specifications on a low-powered engine that all competitors could use, build the car around the engine and then race each other.

The opportunities to show off new technologies wouldn’t be limited to commuter vehicles either. With significant producers of agricultural equipment like John Deere making commitments to electrify their vehicles, there are opportunities to highlight electric vehicles in the agricultural sector amidst the rolling wheat fields of the Walla Walla Valley, d’Orleans added.

“We’re looking on bringing the complete spectrum of electric vehicles from one-wheeled monos and skateboards to bicycles and dirt bikes and mountain bikes and sports bikes and cars and 4x4s and excellent agricultural equipment,” d’Orleans said.

But why Walla Walla?

“Walla Walla is a small town in the middle of nowhere,” Mayor Tom Scribner said Monday. “Why in the world would you want to do something that’s not been done anywhere in the world in Walla Walla?”

Nearer to a big city, d’Orleans explained, a large multi-day festival can be a logistical nightmare — and “I’m not a big fan of suburbs either,” he said. The event would need a lot of space for attendees to test drive electric vehicles, which is more available in a rural area like Walla Walla. The town’s world-class wineries and restaurants, of course, don’t hurt, d’Orleans noted.

“Walla Walla is a world-class destination now,” said d’Orleans, who has passed through the city during motorcycle tours since the 80s. “We’re simply piling on to the good fortune of your incredible soils.”

While the Electric Revolution’s first year, scheduled to take place in one West Coast city in the Fall of 2021 and in Walla Walla in the Spring of 2022, is already ambitious, d’Orleans said Monday that it has the potential to grow significantly year after year. After all, the festival’s lineup would evolve as the technology it highlights evolves.

“There aren’t enough electric monster trucks in the world for us to have an electric monster truck rally right now,” d’Orleans said. “But in 2023, I’m certain there will be.”

With the right locale and some elbow grease, d’Orleans said, the Electric Revolution could be, well, revolutionary.

“It’s such a novel concept,” d’Orleans said. “There’s nothing like this in the world right now.”

Consumers, automakers, and the government will have to work together to pull off President Joe Biden’s ambitious plan to shift the country away from gas-powered vehicles and cut carbon emissions, Wharton management professor John Paul MacDuffie said.

Biden signed an executive order earlier this month that calls for 50% of all new vehicles sold by 2030 to be battery electric, fuel-cell electric, or plug-in hybrid. The Environment Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Transportation also announced the reversal of a Trump-era rollback on emissions standards. The agencies will impose a goal of 52 miles per gallon for passenger vehicles by 2026, a standard that’s even more stringent than President Barack Obama’s 50.8 miles per gallon.

Both measures are part of Biden’s agenda to expand manufacturing, compete with China, and combat climate change. Gasoline-powered vehicles are the single largest source of greenhouse gases in the U.S., according to the EPA. The administration’s plan would cut about 2 billion metric tons of carbon pollution and save about 200 billion gallons of gasoline.

“It’s very ambitious, it’s aspirational, and it’s nonbinding. It’s a goal that’s being set to indicate policy direction or policy enthusiasm or intensity,” MacDuffie said during an interview with the Wharton Business Daily show on Sirius XM. (Listen to the podcast at the top of this page.)

Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, which owns Jeep and Chrysler, pledged that  40% to 50% of their cars sold by 2030 would be electric, a number that signals their willingness to work with the administration to accomplish shared goals, MacDuffie said. However, car buyers may need more persuasion.

“The demand side, of course, is what we know is the toughest,” said MacDuffie, who is director of Wharton’s Program on Vehicle and Mobility Innovation. “Consumer reluctance, charging infrastructure — that’s where the automakers are saying we need a lot of government support for this, maybe subsidies for purchases, and certainly help getting charging infrastructure into difficult places. We’ll see how much support for EVs comes out of what Congress is doing right now.”

MacDuffie said many consumers suffer from “range anxiety,” a worry that electric vehicles are inconvenient or impractical because they can’t go far without needing a charge. But most of the current EVs can travel about 300 miles on a single charge, which MacDuffie pointed out is more than adequate for most daily commuters.

Still, there are a lot of challenges around charging. Homeowners need to install a dedicated 220 voltage line to charge their EVs, while renters have to rely on the provision of charging stations where they live. And all EV drivers need access to public charging stations along major interstates, in commercial corridors, and in rural areas. Public charging stations are becoming more common in densely populated cities, but the infrastructure is still lacking across most of America. It’s a problem that Biden has recognized, calling for the building of a national network of charging stations as part of the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal.

“If the government support for charging infrastructure really targets the places that are harder to do, that will give this a boost in terms of consumer confidence,” MacDuffie said. “But the home charging has the high potential for making a lot of people able to access this type of vehicle.”

If charging stations were available along interstates, for example, drivers would be able to take longer road trips in their EVs. But they’re going to have to be patient; it takes up to 30 minutes for an EV to charge at a super-charging station.

“Obviously, this is the issue that concerns people most,” MacDuffie said, suggesting they can use the charging time to eat lunch or walk around. “People have to be willing to make some changes in their refueling habits to go with this new technology.”

A Competitive Edge

The U.S. lags far behind China and the European Union when it comes to electric vehicle sales. China, once the world’s largest EV market, was surpassed last year by the European Union. MacDuffie said the surge was driven by tighter emissions standards put in place by the E.U., which he called the “world’s pace-setter” on the issue.

He thinks Biden’s plan will help America get into a virtuous cycle: As more charging stations are built, more EVs will be sold, which will bring down the price and encourage others to buy. That momentum will make the adoption curve steeper.

“That’s where we’d see the biggest gains in terms of climate [change], and maybe it’s where we finally see a tipping point in terms of the public perception of these vehicles,” MacDuffie said.

Aug 24 (Reuters) – Akira Yoshino, a co-winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on lithium-ion batteries, can take credit for the upheaval in both the automotive and technology industries.

Lithium-ion batteries have provided the first serious competition in a century to fossil fuels and combustion engines for transportation. Now an honorary fellow at Asahi Kasei, the Japanese chemical firm where he has worked for nearly 50 years, Yoshino sees more disruption ahead as transportation and digital technology become one industry, sharing lithium battery technology.

Yoshino spoke with Reuters about about the next generation of electric vehicle batteries, the potential for shared autonomous electric vehicles that can charge themselves, the prospects for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and the possibility that Apple could lead the convergence of the automotive and information technology industries in future mobility.

Here is an edited transcript: Reuters: What technical innovations — in design, in chemistry and materials, even in processes — might keep lithium ion as the dominant EV battery chemistry and for how much longer? Yoshino: There are two major areas of innovation that would be the key. One would be new cathode materials and anode materials. The second one would be the system where the EV is used. In other words, how people will be using the EVs, and how they charge them and discharge them. Reuters: Are you speaking of people using electric vehicles in different ways? That is, not owning vehicles, but paying per use, for instance, through ride sharing? Yoshino: Yes, I think the biggest potential is in sharing. If autonomous electric vehicles can become practical, that will cause a huge change in the way people use vehicles. Reuters: How long before wireless charging of electric vehicle batteries will become a reality, whether it’s through the roadbed or solar panels on the vehicle or some other means? Yoshino: The basic technology for wireless charging is not a problem. The problem is how to apply this in a practical system. There are two possibilities. One is cars that are parked in a certain place where wireless charging is available. The second one is while the car is moving. It’s probably not going to be on every road, but on certain roads where this is available, that could be possible.

If you think of autonomous electric vehicles, the vehicles will know when they need to charge and on their own just go to the charging station. That kind of situation can be practical sooner than you think. Reuters: Toyota and Honda are selling small numbers of fuel cell electric vehicles, but the hydrogen infrastructure to support fuel cells seems like it’s many years away. Yoshino: With the fuel cell vehicle, there are challenges on the technology and the costs, but you can overcome them. If you think about the longer term, 2030 to 2050, autonomous shared vehicles are going to come about. Hypothetically, an autonomous vehicle could be run by a gasoline engine, it could be electric, it could be a fuel cell. It doesn’t matter what the power source is. But it needs to replenish its energy somehow. If the vehicle can’t do that automatically without a human intervention, the system is kind of meaningless. The same thing would be true for gasoline or hydrogen.

In that sense, the electric vehicle is the one that can replace its energy automatically. If you think of the Roomba vacuum cleaner, this goes around the room and it goes and recharges itself. If the Roomba needed a person to come and “fill up the tank,” nobody would want to buy the Roomba.

Reuters: What else should we know about the future of mobility? Yoshino: Right now, the auto industry is thinking about how to invest in the future of mobility. At the same time, the IT industry is also thinking about the future of mobility. Somewhere, sometime, with the auto industry and the IT industry, there is going to be some kind of convergence for the future of mobility.

Tesla has their own independent strategy. The one to look out for is Apple. What will they do? I think they may announce something soon. And what kind of car would they announce? What kind of battery? They probably want to get in around 2025. If they do that, I think they have to announce something by the end of this year. That’s just my own personal hypothesis. The Genesis GV60, the first electric car from Hyundai’s luxury car line, is capable of wireless charging, the Korean company announced last week.

The compact SUV was revealed Thursday, and with it came the additional announcement of a wireless charging option from American company WiTricity. The EV will use the same battery platform as that on Hyundai’s upcoming line of electric vehicles. Hyundai estimates about 270 miles of range on a single charge.

The Genesis car will be released in Korea later this year before launching in the U.S. in 2022. When it arrives in the U.S. it’ll be the first all-electric vehicle that can be parked over a charging pad that will start filling up the battery. No plug necessary.

It’ll take about six hours parked over the mat to fully charge, compared to plugging in for 10 hours or longer at public stations or home wall chargers.

BMW was the first to introduce wireless charging in the states with its plug-in hybrid. But the Genesis will be the first 100 percent electric car to use inductive charging. Hyundai didn’t get into specifics, but noted that the wireless charging would be an optional feature, not something every Genesis GV60 will have.

In Korea, only 600 of the new EVs will be made with wireless charging capabilities.

While not as fast as, say, a Tesla Supercharger, at least you can’t forget to plug in.
