Memorial Day unofficially marks the start of summer with barbecues, weekend getaways and, of course, deals. If you’re looking for amazing deals on mattresses, TVs, appliances and patio furniture, you won’t be disappointed. But those aren’t the only shopping categories that offer deep discounts. You can find bargains on everything from trendy water bottles to delicious meat — especially if you skip the stores and shop online.

Below I’ve rounded up all the best Memorial Day sales and select items that caught my eye, including $400 off a 65-inch Vizio OLED TV, $150 off the Neato D7 robotic vacuum, and free access to Ancestry.com. These deals can be found at online retailers like Best Buy and Lowe’s, as well as individual merchants such as ButcherBox, GlassesUSA and Samsung. NieR: Automata is a much praised and loved title, and often pops up on various “Switch port pls” lists. Now the same applies to the snappily titled NieR Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139, which was a recent re-release / remaster – our chums at Push Square describe it as “halfway between” the two descriptions. Though it won’t be to everyone’s taste, this shiny and improved iteration of the original cult classic has been quite well received.

So, will we see them on Switch, or even on a hardware revision that has a bit more power under the hood? It’s possible, and some datamine results shared on Reddit highlight that there are ‘NX’ presets buried in the game’s code, which of course refers to the original codename and development reference for Switch. This is a follow-up in the rumour mill on an Amazon listing for a Switch version that briefly appeared last year.

However, the same dataminer highlights in an update that they reckon Switch work had been dropped or at least sidelined by the time the title got into the final stages of development. Referencing the PC executable from launch that names the other platforms, no reference to ‘NX’ is made there.

What are the odds of NieR Replicant getting ported, perhaps along with NieR Automata? We suspect Nintendo would have to incentivise Square Enix to go to the effort, and they are also quite demanding games to run – they do perform on PS4 and Xbox One, but there are compromises and the PC ports are also notoriously inefficient. That said, the huge popularity of the Switch means that most publishers will consider ports if they feel the audience is enthusiastic.

The dreaded day for Google Photos users is here. Today, May 31, is the last day of you enjoying free unlimited high-quality storage in Google Photos. Starting tomorrow, June 1, all your high-quality and express-quality images will count towards your free 15GB Google account storage.

Once you reach that 15GB limit, you will have to start deleting some of your photos or other Google Drive content to free up space. Alternatively, you can also purchase a Google One plan to increase your Google account’s storage up to 2TB.

The good news is that your high-quality and express-quality photos and videos backed up before June 1, 2021, won’t count toward your 15GB Google Account storage. So if you still haven’t backed up some images, now is the time to do so.

Original quality photos and videos will continue to count toward your Google account storage. Photos backed up in original quality and then compressed to high quality after June 1, 2021, will also count toward your Google account storage.

You can use Google’s storage management tool to know how much storage space you have left, clean up storage, delete blurry photos and screenshots, and get more storage.

I am a Pixel owner. Will Google Photos storage changes also apply to me?

If you have a Google Pixel 5 or an earlier device, you’ll continue to receive free unlimited storage for photos and videos backed up from your Pixel devices. Pixel 3 owners can still upload unlimited original quality images to Google Photos through January 31, 2022, when it will switch to unlimited high-quality pictures. Pixel 2 owners have already switched to unlimited high-quality uploads as of January 16, 2021. Those who own the original Pixel will be able to continue uploading at original quality with no limits.

What happens to my photos if I’m over the limit?

If you exceed your 15GB storage quota, it means you’re using more storage space than you have available. Google says if you’re over quota for 24 months, your content may be impacted.

Xiaomi has shown off its latest fast charging tech demo, and consequently is claiming the new world records for both wired and wireless charging speeds. Using a modified Mi 11 Pro with a 4,000mAh battery, Xiaomi says it’s able to fully charge the phone in 8 minutes over a 200W wired “HyperCharge” system, or in 15 minutes with 120W wireless charging.

Charging speeds are a frequent battleground for Chinese smartphone companies, who often release demonstrations of breakthroughs that may or may not show up in final products. Two years ago, for example, Xiaomi announced a 100W system that could charge a 4,000mAh battery in 17 minutes, while last year’s Mi 10 Ultra filled up in 23 minutes at 120W — though it did have a bigger 4,500mAh battery.

Oppo is another leader in this field, with its VOOC technology forming the basis of OnePlus’ Dash and Warp fast charging systems. Last year it demonstrated a 4,000mAh-in-20-minutes 125W system, though that was more than a year after Xiaomi’s supposedly faster 100W announcement, and the excellent current flagship Find X3 Pro charges at “only” 65W.

Progress is always welcome, and the thought of being able to fully charge a phone in eight minutes is certainly appealing. It’s worth noting, though, that these fast-charge systems always require proprietary chargers and cables, so they’ll mostly be used at home rather than in the emergency situations where they might be most useful. Ultimately, any given phone’s ability to make it through the day on its own juice will continue to be the more important factor for a while.

If you have an iPhone, you may be familiar with Sign In with Apple — a privacy tool that gives iOS users more security when using third-party apps and websites with their Apple ID. Instead of signing in with Facebook, Google or making a brand new account, you can choose the Sign In with Apple option to use your Apple ID to verify your credentials. It’s not a bad idea to figure this out now, ahead of Apple’s WWDC 2021, when we’re likely to see some new Apple products. 

Sign In with Apple was introduced back at WWDC 2019, at a moment  when privacy had become a hot-button political issue with multiple companies like Facebook and Quest Diagnostics taking center stage in security debates. The feature signaled the tech giant’s commitment to privacy that the company has long made a mantra. Since then, Apple has added more privacy controls to iOS, including the ability to stop apps from tracking you across websites, and “nutrition labels” that let you see what information apps collect before you download. 

If you haven’t tried Sign In with Apple, here’s everything you need to know about how it works and how to use it. Plus, here’s how to check your iPhone’s privacy settings in two easy steps, and 9 rules for strong passwords. 

How to use Sign In with Apple

1. When you open an app or website — if it supports Sign In with Apple — simply tap Continue with Apple. 

2. Accept or deny any permissions the app asks for.

3. Follow the onscreen prompts regarding your Apple ID. You can choose to edit your name, share or hide your email. Choose Continue. 

4. Enter your passcode when prompted. You can also confirm with Face ID or Touch ID. If you don’t have any of the three, you can use your Apple ID password. 

As long as you’re signed in on your device, you’ll be signed into the app. To sign out, just locate the settings in the app or website and choose Sign Out. You’ll need to repeat the process if you want to sign back in.

How does Sign In with Apple Work?

Sign In with Apple uses your iOS device to verify your credentials, instead of your social account logins, which could make you vulnerable to being tracked online. With the Hide My Email option, Apple creates a random email address — you’ll recognize it by the unique alphanumeric string followed by @privaterelay.appleid.com. 

The random email address can only be used for one specific app. The app or website will use the generated email, but Apple will forward any correspondence to your real email, protecting your identity. You can reply to whichever emails you like without exposing your personal email address. Apple lets you turn off the email forwarding feature at any time as well.

Sign In with Apple says it won’t use any of your information aside from what’s required to let you sign in and out of an account. The tool also employs two-factor authentication with Face ID or Touch ID. If you don’t see the Sign In option, that means the app or website doesn’t support it yet.

Can I see the apps that use Sign In with Apple?

Yes. Here’s how: 

1. Open the Settings app iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and tap your name.

2. Tap Passwords and Security

3. Choose Apps Using Your Apple ID.

From there — if you’ve used Sign In — you should see a list of apps. You can tap through each app and see what (or change) the preferences you put in place, as well as read the app or website’s privacy policy. You can also toggle off email forwarding here as well as stop using your Apple ID with the app.

1. Sign in to appleid.apple.com.

2. Find the Security section.

3. Select Manage Apps and Websites under Sign In with Apple.

Can I change my forwarding email address? 

Yes. If you use Hide My Email and need to make some changes, here’s how on mobile:

1. Open Settings. 

2. Tap your name 

3. Tap Name, Phone Numbers, Email.

4. Tap Forward to under Hide My Email.

5. Choose a new email address to use in forwarding. 

The new address you enter will apply across all the apps you’re using Sign In’s Hide My Email feature with. 

How is Sign In with Apple different from signing in with Facebook or Google?

Sign In with Apple is visually similar to the icons that let you sign into an app or website with Google or Facebook. While signing in with Facebook or Google might seem easier, a lot of your personal information is attached to those accounts, like nicknames, your hometown and your birthday. This data might seem trite at face value, but some of that information is prime security question fodder for your bank account, for example. 

Sign In with Apple also gives you more control over the permissions apps and websites have access to. You can pick and choose which apps have to ask your permission each time it requests your location data from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It’s handy if you’re trying out a new app or you don’t plan on using an app often, for example.

Despite using the real-life stories of Cuban guerilla fighters from the 1950s and 1960s as inspiration, Far Cry 6‘s narrative director Navid Khavari has said the team is not trying to “make a political statement about what’s happening in Cuba” with their new game.

Speaking to TheGamer, Khavari said that, while he wants Far Cry 6 to feel authentic and pay homage to guerilla fighters from around the world and throughout history, the team also doesn’t want to make it specifically about the current issues in Cuba or any other real-world location.

“The original inspiration was Guerilla Warfare and what is that guerilla fantasy, which is obviously tied to revolution,” Khivari said. “When you talk about guerillas, you think of the guerillas in the 1950s and 1960s, we actually went down there to speak to actual guerilla fighters who fought back then, and we just really fell in love with their stories.

“But we also fell in love with the culture and people we met,” Khivari continued. “When we came out of that, it wasn’t that we felt we had to do Cuba, we realized it’s a complicated island and our game doesn’t want to make a political statement about what’s happening in Cuba specifically. Beyond that, we’re drawing inspiration from guerilla movements around the world and throughout history. For us, it felt like doing the island of Yara would help us tell that story while being very open with our politics and inspiration.”

However, this doesn’t mean the team plans on pulling its punches in regards to exploring how a revolution impacts the people involved and surrounding one.

“A revolution is complex, and the people you’re going to engage with are also complex. I use this line of philosophy, which is that every character has their own heartbeat, you just have to find it,” Khavari said. “We have this melting pot of motivational complexity where we tried to translate that into the gameplay and the story. So tonally, it sort of already existed. But for us, thematically, unifying that into the guerilla fantasy felt pretty natural.”

This follows similar comments from Ubisoft for games like The Division 2 and Far Cry 5 staying politically impartial. However, Watch Dogs Legion creative director Clint Hocking said, “I believe that it’s our responsibility as creators of culture to talk about stuff that’s real, and that matters to people. I think Ubisoft is a bold company and has a willingness to explore issues and allow creative teams to engage with challenging subject matter.”
