Brazil regulator fines Apple $2 million for not including chargers with iPhone 12
The consumer protection agency in Brazil’s São Paulo state has fined Apple $2 million for failing to include chargers within iPhone 12 boxes, according to 9to5 Mac. Procon-SP says Apple engaged in “misleading advertising, selling a device without the charger and unfair terms.”
Apple announced in October that the iPhone 12 and would not come with chargers or earbuds in their boxes, citing environmental concerns. By only including a USB-C to Lightning cable with iPhone 12 and other new models, Apple said it would be able to reduce the raw materials for each iPhone it sells, in addition to reducing the size of the phones’ boxes. Critics suggested the change had more to do with allowing Apple to reduce shipping costs, and environmental experts said the impact on the environment would likely be minimal.
Procon said it asked Apple whether the company would reduce the iPhone 12’s price since there were no chargers included, and did not receive a response. The agency also accused the company of failing to help customers who had “problems with some functions” on their iPhones following updates. A spokesman for the agency said Apple “needs to respect these laws and these institutions.”
The fine does not seem like it would be particularly troubling for Apple, which had $111.4 billion in revenue in the first quarter of 2021 (that total includes 2020 holiday sales of iPhone 12 models).
Apple did not immediately reply to a request for comment Saturday from The Verge.
Free PS4 and PS5 Games We May Get for April 2021
Resident Evil 7 (PS4 & PlayStation VR)
Reason: When April’s PlayStation Plus games release, Resident Evil Village will be a month out. Of course, a new mainline Resident Evil game doesn’t need any help generating hype, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt Capcom to make Resident Evil 7 free ahead of time to get players in the mood and ready for Resident Evil Village. And as you may know, Resident Evil Village is a continuation of Resident Evil 7, so it makes sense to make sure everyone has played it before Resident Evil Village releases. Some may say it’s foolish to make RE7 free ahead of Resident Evil Village as the latter will certainly cause a spike in sales of the former, but this argument forgets that Resident Evil 7 has been out for four years at this point. Everyone who was going to buy the game has done so already. Lastly, this also lets Sony check the PlayStation VR box, which is something it’s been seemingly striving to do more of lately.
About: “Set in modern-day rural America and taking place after the dramatic events of Resident Evil® 6, players experience the terror directly from the first-person perspective. Resident Evil 7 embodies the series’ signature gameplay elements of exploration and tense atmosphere that first coined “survival horror” some twenty years ago; meanwhile, a complete refresh of gameplay systems simultaneously propels the survival horror experience to the next level.”
Mass Effect: Andromeda (PS4)
Reason: Mass Effect: Andromeda has a similar pitch to Resident Evil 7. When April’s PlayStation Plus games release, Mass Effect: Legendary Collection will be a month out. If there was a time for Mass Effect: Andromeda to go free on PlayStation Plus, it would be in April. Not only does EA have nothing to lose, but the game is a far better product than it was at launch, when most people played it. In other words, this represents an opportunity for EA to erode part of the narrative around the game and replace it with something a bit more positive. Meanwhile, for Sony, adding Mass Effect: Andromeda lets them check the AAA box and it may lead to more players buying Mass Effect: Legendary Collection on PS4 over Xbox One and PC.
About: “Mass Effect: Andromeda takes players to the Andromeda galaxy, far beyond the Milky Way. There, you’ll lead the fight for a new home in hostile territory as the Pathfinder – a leader of military-trained explorers. This is the story of humanity’s next chapter, and your choices throughout the game will ultimately determine humanity’s survival.”
NieR: Automata (PS4)
Reason: “Just like Resident Evil 7 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, now is the time to make NieR: Automata free. For one, it’s now four years old and has sold millions of copies, aka how much more can Square Enix expect to squeeze from this stone? Two, and more importantly, later in April, “Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139…” will release, a remaster of NieR: Automata’s predecessor. So, again, this is another opportunity for synergy and it would be a great final hoorah for the game, which owes much of its success to its players on PS4. “
About: “NieR: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S, and A2 and their battle to reclaim the machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful machines. Humanity has been driven from the Earth by mechanical beings from another world. In a final effort to take back the planet, the human resistance sends a force of android soldiers to destroy the invaders. Now, a war between machines and androids rages on… A war that could soon unveil a long-forgotten truth of the world.”
Oddworld: Soulstorm (PS5) (Already Confirmed)
Reason: Already confirmed.
About: “Oddworld: Soulstorm represents a big visual and cinematic leap. With intelligent new mechanics and twisted new devices which enable highly explosive deviousness. This is a dark parable that tells an epic tale of a volatile society pushed to its limits.”

It was previously reported that Sinéad tried to sell her house back in 2017, and came close to securing a sale before it fell through, according to The Irish Times.
Last month Sinéad penned a cryptic Twitter post to ask her fans to pray for her teenage son Shane after revealing that she’d had a ‘hideous day from hell.’
While not disclosing what had happened, she wrote: ‘Any spare prayers out there, pls stick one in for my son, Shane. The very light of my life.’

Worrying: Last month Sinéad penned a cryptic Twitter post to ask her fans to pray for her teenage son Shane after revealing that she’d had a ‘hideous day from hell’
On hold: It comes after the singer announced that she has cancelled her upcoming tour dates to enter a ‘one-year programme for trauma and addiction’
The mother-of-four added in another tweet: ‘Hideous day from hell.’ Several fans responded to Sinéad’s tweets, sending their well wishes and saying they’d be thinking about Shane.
It comes after the singer announced that she has cancelled her upcoming tour dates to enter a ‘one-year programme for trauma and addiction’.
She revealed the news last November after saying she had ‘lost someone beloved’ and had endured a ‘traumatic six years.’
Concerns: She revealed the news last November after saying she had ‘lost someone beloved’ and had endured a ‘traumatic six years’
Tragic: Sinéad admitted she had been ‘addicted to weed for 34 years’ but ‘became briefly addicted’ to another drug following her loss
Sorry! She wrote: ‘Message for folks who have tickets for next year’s shows: those shows are being postponed until 2022 so that I may go into a one year trauma and addiction treatment program’
On the mend: She then added: ‘Because I had a very traumatic six years and this year was the end of it but now recovery starts’
Upsetting: She continued the lengthy thread: ‘This year I lost someone beloved and has affected me so badly that I became briefly addicted to a drug other than weed’
Sinéad admitted she had been ‘addicted to weed for 34 years’ but ‘became briefly addicted’ to another drug following her loss.
The singer uses two Twitter accounts, one managing her professional business with an official blue tick and another under her Islamic moniker Shuhanda Sadaqat, which she used to make the announcement.
Apologising to her fans in a heartfelt statement, she wrote: ‘Message for folks who have tickets for next year’s shows: those shows are being postponed until 2022 so that I may go into a one year trauma and addiction treatment program because I had a very traumatic six years and this year was the end of it but now recovery starts.’
Addicted: Sinéad continued: ‘I have been addicted to weed for 34 years. A lifetime. I grew up with a lot of trauma and abuse. I then went straight into the music business’
I need help! The Nothing Compares 2 U hitmaker then pleaded with her fans to be ‘supportive’ and keep hold of their tickets for 2022, when she vowed to return with a new album
Determined: But she also added that her four shows in Ireland will not be cancelled ‘unless Covid prevents them’ as she does not need to leave the ‘country or rehab to do those’
She continued the lengthy thread: ‘This year I lost someone beloved and has affected me so badly that I became briefly addicted to a drug other than weed.
‘I have been addicted to weed for 34 years. A lifetime. I grew up with a lot of trauma and abuse. I then went straight into the music business.
‘And never learned really how to make a normal life. Never took proper time to heal. Wasn’t ready to either.’
The Nothing Compares 2 U hitmaker then pleaded with her fans to be ‘supportive’ and keep hold of their tickets for 2022, when she vowed to return with a new album.
But she also added that her four shows in Ireland will not be cancelled ‘unless Covid prevents them’ as she does not need to leave the ‘country or rehab to do those’.
What a house! Sinéad first purchased her home in Ireland in 2007, but has previously attempted to sell the property
Apple CEO Cook, executives on tentative list of witnesses in Epic Games case
(Reuters) – Apple Inc’s CEO Tim Cook, software chief Craig Federighi and other executives were named on a tentative list of witnesses in the software giant’s case against Epic Games, a court filing dated March 19 showed.
App Store Vice President Matt Fischer and Apple Fellow Phil Schiller were also named on the list submitted to the U.S. District Court Northern District of California Oakland Division, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.
The iPhone maker has been at loggerheads with Epic Games, the creator of the popular game Fortnite, which last year tried to avoid a 30% fee which Apple charges developers on the App Store by launching its own in-app payment system. The move prompted Apple to ban Fortnite from its store.
In a separate court filing, Epic Games listed its founder and Chief Executive Tim Sweeney among its own witnesses in the case.
Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, but told Bloomberg here in a statement that it felt “confident the case will prove that Epic purposefully breached its agreement solely to increase its revenues.”
A direct message to Epic Games on one of its official Twitter handles did not elicit an immediate response.

Video: Here’s Digital Foundry’s Technical Analysis Of Apex Legends On Switch
The ambitious port of Apex Legends landed on the Nintendo Switch earlier this month, so how does it hold up? Digital Foundry has now put Panic Button’s conversion to the test, trying out the latest version of the game based on patch 1.07.
In terms of resolution, the game runs at 720p in docked play, with “dynamic resolution scaling dropping to 1066×600 minimum” and 576p dynamic in portable, with a “960×540 minimum”.
DF highlights a number of cuts – textures lack an immense amount of detail, shadows are affected, the draw distance is pulled back and obscured by fog, effects are scaled back, and trees, bushes and ground object detail is also massively reduced. Then there’s the removal of the “vast majority” of grass and foliage, which is considered to be a “cut too far”. It results in a passable experience:
“What users effectively get is a good enough, albeit lower poly rendition of the game world. Everything is as it should be and renders properly at range. Think of it as a less complex but decent enough rendition of the world. Reflections are also retained, lens flares are kept, while cloth physics are present and correct. Enemies also render in at the same range, crucial to a fair experience for all players. Switch exclusive benefits are thin on the ground, but gyro aiming is included.”
The performance is obviously the biggest talking point of Apex Legends on the Switch – with framerates tumbling to “the low 20fps” during firefights. Outside of this, the target of 30FPS is maintained, but that’s still only half the framerate players on other console platforms, who are running the game at 60FPS.
“The main problem is that frame-rate problems intrude during confrontations with other players – exactly where performance should be at its best. On top of that, there’s the sense the frame-rate may start to buckle simply by being in proximity to other players – an unlikely early warning system of sorts?”
Digital Foundry says the cutbacks are “so severe” that its final recommendation is to turn off the crossplay functionality (which is auto-enabled) to play exclusively with other Switch users and even the playing field.

Twitter confirms it’s testing an ‘undo tweet’ feature — but it could be limited to Professional Tweeters
The evidence is mounting that Twitter will be adding an “undo tweet” feature, but that those who want it will have to pay: app researcher Jane Manchun Wong has discovered a subscription screen tied to the feature. The ability to take back tweets has also shown up on a survey asking Twitter users about features they’d be willing to pay for, as well as in the code for the app, and CNET received confirmation today from Twitter that it is, in fact, being tested.
When it will become widely available is unknown, but it’s understandable why Twitter could be considering reserving the feature for its potential subscription service: what’s a better lure than a “keep yourself out of trouble” button?
For its part, Twitter hasn’t said if the feature will be limited to paying customers — it’s possible it’s not far enough along in development for that decision to have been made yet.
It’s also worth noting that the button’s design suggests that it works similarly to the “undo send” button in Gmail, where the site simply waits a few seconds before actually sending the message. In other words, it’s not really the edit button that people clamor for, but it could at least get you some of the way to that functionality (albeit minus the part where someone else can tell you that you’ve made a mistake).
If Twitter is open to suggestions for the undo button, here’s one: have it pop up if someone blasts through the offensive tweet warning, giving them a few more seconds to reconsider. Whether that would fix the general atmosphere on Twitter is hard to say, but it’s probably at least worth a shot, right?
